A great full day excursion for those who want a taste of Tuscany. You will depart from Rome on a comfortable air conditioned bus. Our destination today is the Val D’Orcia in Tuscany. Your first stop is the beautiful hill top town of Montepulciano. Here you will visit the main sites of this ancient Etruscan town. You will see the main square, the Duomo and the medieval bell tower where Pulcinella (a Neapolitan character of the Commedia dell’Arte) strikes the hours. Montepulciano has a maze of underground caves where many of the wine shops have their cellars. You will visit one of the ancient medieval wine cellars.
You will continue to the tour to the vineyards of Montalcino where the fine wine Brunello di Montalcino is produced. You will make a stop in the ancient abbey of Sant’ Antimo where often you can listen to monks performing Gregorian Chants. Our next stop is a Tuscan vineyard where you will be guided for a tour and wine tasting of three local wines accompanied by a sumptuous lunch featuring local specialties.
After lunch you will continue to Pienza a World Heritage site. Here you will have time to visit the town on your own. You can take in the wonderful architecture and ambiance of the small charming town. And you will want to taste the local, Pecorino Cheese in one of the many specialty shops.
After your visit it is time to return to Rome hopefully with an appreciation for Tuscany and a desire to return for a longer time.
