Your guide will take you slowly through some of the ancient streets of Pompeii where you can see Baths, Forums and Villas built by the prosperous Romans in the year 80 B.C. against the backdrop of the impressive Mount Vesuvius. Even if your interests do not lie in history, this archaeological site truly cannot fail to impress you. Once you have completed your tour of Pompeii, you will head out by motor coach to its sister city, Herculaneum (known as Ercolano in Italian). Like its more famous neighbour Pompeii, Herculaneum was also enveloped by the eruption of Vesuvius. While hot ash charred or consumed all of the wood of the structures in Pompeii, Herculaneum was flooded with hot mud which buried, sealed and protected entire buildings. As a result, you will be able to see the spectacular villas enjoyed by the upper-class Romans as a sort of snapshot in time. The marvelous workmanship of the inlaid marble floors, mosaics, and paintings, and carbonized wood will surely amaze you. You will explore the ancient city on foot with your guide, and then continue on to a local cameo factory. After your visit, you will be returned to the Naples port and your cruise ship.
